First
of all i'd like to ask
you a sort of introduction
of the BAAL project.
How is born his musical
attitude and in which
circumstances you opted
for the harsh
industrial approach?
U-tarou : At first, Mikito
is BAAL, BAAL's brain.
He created BAAL himself.
About 13 years ago. We
already were meeting.
We were meeting as a friend.
We were playing another
band each other.
I was singing.. Punk,
Hard core, or like a NO
DOUBT...
Mikito already was playing
industrial band by CHAPTER.(the
band's leader was
New Zealander)
But, he was guitar.
And, my band(U-tarou)
broke then.
It was about 8 years ago.
He was looking for female
vocalist then.
Because, he wanted to
start his own band.
It is industrial Rock
band.
I have scream voice,
and he liked my style.
I asked him that I join
Mikito's band.
(After, we found out our
drummer)
We've been playing together
ever since.
Mikito have originality
in his sounds.
And he is very creative.
I believe his sounds,
and it will spread to
the world.
So, I want to scream by
his sounds.
I think, my lyrics and
voice is fit with BAAL.
I've
recovered in you the ability
to develop the language
exposed by acts
like Nine Inch Nails(Broken
period), Marilyn Manson
(Antichrist period), Atari
Teenage Riot and Skinny
Puppy without lose an
expressionistic and cinematographic
side (i think expecially
to The Collapse of Rusty
Kingdom) that i consider
typical
of you and your cultureノTerritory
Of BAAl like territory
of the japanese industrial
gothic perspective, am
i wrong?
U-tarou : Yeah, you're
right.
These artist influenced
us.
Especially, Mikito. His
first impact sound was
MINISTERY. As a Industrial.
[The Collapse of Rusty
Kingdom] is his soul and
mind.
Darkness, sadness, and
very passionate.
These feeling is living
in abyss.
Vomit out.
[The Collapse of Rusty
Kingdom] haven't the lyrics.
Nothing.
Only the sound tell you.
And, you can see like
a cinematographic.
He makes sound with only
his mind.
When I listen to it,
it makes me feel cry.
About the Japanese industrial
gothic perspective.
We aren't gothic.
But I think, it's not
perspective against Japanese
gothic.
Surely, Japanese music
scene is dead.
So, on the other hand,,,,
We are fighting against
them.
I'd
like to discover with
your help the symbology
behind BAAL.
The name recall two historical
aspects connected with
fall and lust: the idol-demon
Baal and one of the first
works of Bertolt Brecht
(opus called with the
same name
and connected with the
sexuality's dark side
and its tie with the society's
violence).
I'd like to know if there's
a particolar will on you
to underline these cultural
parallels
or your denunciation is
totally direct?
U-tarou : I'm sorry,
I'm afraid I don't really
know about Bertolt Brecht.
So, I checked Bertolt
Brecht by internet with
your interview. I could
know a little
about him, now.
BAAL has many meanings
as a God, you know?
The god of sun, Evil's
God..Rain....
A guardian deity of farm,
For us, the BAAL meanings
is the boss of the devil's
army.
[Dictionnaire infernal]
by written Collin de plancy.
He wrote about BAAL.
BAAL has power in the
hell, and he is the boss
of the hell's army.
Moreover, BAAL has three
heads in his head.
We're three members. It
is fit for us.
And, BAAL is band name
and Mikito's name.
He was named BAAL by his
past band. (Chapter).
Definitely, it was decision
to name the BAAL.
I like this name.
Europe has a lot of mythology.
Mythology is ingrained
to European.
It is so mysterious. And
wonderful, I really think
so.
So, some people sometimes
ask to us about the BAAL's
name.
[Why did you choose this
name to your band?]
I know the feeling, and
I know what you mean.
Anyway, use to the God's
name is very important
things. Therefore, we(Mikito)
decided to use the
God's name.
Impact, importance, influence......to
the people.
I realize that these meanings.
I
don't know if is right
my interpretation of your
intention. I've found
singual, or
primary if you prefer,
three songs: Bloody Logic
Comunication, Vermin and
Myrrha.
I've discovered behind
them the will to underline
the necrophiliac and technological
process ot the today's
societyノYou use Baal like
definition, other one
talk about Kali
Yuga aeon, but the new
monster appeared from
the consumistic-mechanical
stuff:
"you named it desire,
i called it murder"
(the global war on television),
"i like your
head such a TV type
", "i need your
pain for rot youノ".
Is there a common origin
of the evil, of death?
U-tarou : Yes, the human
need desire, and pain.
But, if both of balance
is broken ....
The murder happen, if
you will.
In the real world,
I'm making the lyrics.
So, I think my lyrics
is reflection of modern
society.
Sometimes, I've seen
living dead in this world.
They can't die, live,
and they can't know their
evil, desire.
What's more, the TV bring
poison to living dead.
They hate pain and avoid
it.
But, I think...people
should think a lot about
the way of life.
My brain always thicken.
Because, if I sing a
song with my lyrics....
I prefer pain to pleasure.
You said it, the evil,
the death, that's right.
Antonin
Artaud many years ago
said that the theatre
(and the art in its whole
forms
manifestations) need to
be cruelty, violence,
impulsive, iconoclast,
for wake up the
sensibility,conscience,
free instinctivity in
the people's mindsノI've
found this attitude
in your artistical images
too, really theatricalsノis
there a singular way in
them to
express the symbolistics'
attitude isn't true? It's
a tie that associate you
with David
Bowie, Marilyn Manson,
Floria
Sigismondi, David Lynch
for exemple.
U-tarou : Of course,
the sounds is the very
important.
But, the visual arts also
important.
Both of them is same.
Very same things.
All of them is linking.
This is my opinion about
BAAL.
The human real mind is
a mass of scare.
The sediment of scare.
The scare create violence,
brutal, impulsive..
On the other hand, delusion,
dialysis, idleness...leech..
crank.... in the abyss.
Yes, I like the visualize
of impact.
Mikito is making BAAL's
sounds,visual, DVD, and
also making BAAL's world
view.
If you see his image world
and our gig.
You will understand a
lot.
Because, your interview
is very understanding
about us, I think.
What
kind of plans have you
got in mind for the future?
U-tarou : Now, BAAL has
fans.
They are yelling with
delight, when we play,
or release our CDs...
I'm really glad, thank
you!
I sing a song and playing
on the stage that why
I wanted to impact something
to
the people.
That way I also have got
impact from someone when
I was young.
If our fans get energy
from us, I'll be happy.
And,, I want to go to
play to the world, and
want to meet great people.
